[Generally when Fuji starts off with a phrase like that, coupled with that particular glint in his eyes, those who know him well enough give him a wide berth and try not to maintain eye-contact for too long. He's currently seated in the Mahogany pokemon center, looking cheerful and attentive, which generally means that he's bored as hell and gods forbid you attract his attention in any way.
But people don't know that. Yet. He tilts his head, and goes on, whimsically.]
People still celebrate their birthdays here, don't they? If you've arrived as an eighteen-year-old, and some time passes and your birthday rolls around, it's natural to want to celebrate it -- especially with the friendships that spring up over time.
On the other hand, I've heard from the grapevine that when you return to your own world, you're dropped off at the exact same point as when you've left.
[Consideration!]
If an eighteen-year-old celebrates his nineteenth birthday here, would that make that hypothetical person both eighteen and nineteen at the same time?
[That smile is wry. So very wry.]
In other news, I've recently heard of a tree that punches people.

It's more or less a city away. I'd say half a day to a day's worth of traveling.

But water would be a bit of a problem. I wonder if it's too unreasonable to expect a ferry service.

Gotta have Surf. Not sure where you get Surf here. [ Now he's racking his brain, trying to remember from Red and Green — ] It was in the Safari Zone in the games, and you had to have five badges to use it. [ You can hear the grimace in his voice. ]

... and then he realizes that most people here tend to avoid talking about the games all-together unless they know the other knows of it. Isn't this interesting.]
Then again, this isn't exactly a normal game situation. [Shrug.] It looks like they've changed things around a bit, though. Or at least, there are a lot more pokemon here than I last remembered. [see: giant beetles, exploding pine-cones and cute little giraffes until you realize they're also scorpions.]

Yeah, I guess. Looking at the map, though, the only other direction to go is east, then south, and that dumps you right back out near the dinky starter town. Ain't gonna happen.
Gotta find out what's up with Surf.

Oh, I don't know. Sometimes, taking the scenic route can be rewarding.
[Still, a chuckle at that.] I'll leave that up to you. I can't imagine that nobody's found out anything about it all this time.

Define 'rewarding.' My team would steamroll anything in the area down south. [ There's a comparison begging to be made here. Something about D1 and the Kantou Regionals, but he keeps his mouth shut. ]

Well, I doubt waiting around for Surf and Fly to drop out of the sky would be feasible any time soon. [Wry. And yes, keep your mouth shut. :|]
And if nothing else, there is a very interesting tree out there waiting for a look-see.
